Lions Unlimited purchased over 100 Pono books to train every student at a local elementary school
Joy Tassillio from Lions Unlimited coordinated the purchase of "Why is Pono Not Pono Today" books to donate to a local elementary school in Hilo. They bought enough books so they could hand one out to every student. Deb Lewis created an online companion course called "Take Kids from Stressed to Success" and trained all the teachers. Here Deb went into greater depth of the stress lessons, skills, and insights within the book.

One teacher chose to read "Why Is Pono not Pono Today?" to her class and said,“I have a student in my class who gets angry and frustrated very easily. On this particular day I decided to read the story to the class she was upset over a small matter and had her head down with her eyes covered. As I was well into the story she would slowly peek and soon she was upright and very interested into the story. She had forgotten what she was angry about and was smiling and participating in the questions I asked stress free and at peace.”

When asked about the book, the mother of a 5-year-old shared, “She said Pono was angry because all of the people were mean to him. Kuleana helped him get better. She said she showed him love and respect.
Verbatim: She’s in Kindergarten. Much more articulate than I am...right now.”

Several weeks after introducing the book to her class, a 5th grade teacher wrote, “One of my students came up today and requested to read the (Pono) book (again) saying, “I can feel my mental stability slipping away and I need to respond versus react.”

I loved this book!!! It’s a great way to help younger children get a powerful understanding about what stress is, how it can happen and how you can use it to your advantage like Kuleana did.
What I love about the book is that it gives words to feeling a child can start using to verbally describe what is going on inside.
I’ll be recommending this book to everyone 👍🏻👌🏼🙏

Wonderful book with a powerful message for children AND adults. Stress will never go away so rather than ignore it, this book beautifully shares a story that gives little ones the courage to solve problems that arrive in life. Hopeful, endearing, and magical…this book should be in every library and classroom in the world! It is never too early to empower our younger generations and it will not only impact them but any adult who reads it too! There is no greater gift than to teach someone to understand their feelings and this book does this in a way very few books have!
